Potential Fraud Alert from Witney Chang

Artists Registry.com is issuing a warning to all artists. We have received dozens of reports of Witney Chang contacting our members stating an interest in buying art. If you have been contacted by this person, you are advised to ignore it. Please post any relevant information you have about this or other potential art scams here.

Why Artists Fall Prey to Scams

Desperation! Artists allow others to take advantage of them because they are so eager for sales. Often common sense takes a back seat to a quick sale. My advice to you is STOP CHASING THE BUYER! If someone really wants your art, you will know. If you get an email with almost no information, consider that you may not be the only artist receiving that letter. If there is one time for you to be arrogant, this is it. If the person inquiring about your work doesn't know if you create paintings or sculpture, or uses really bad English. BEWARE! People who prey on artists know that you work alone, and by not being in contact with other artists, you are more vulnerable to attack. Web sites like Artists Registry and others help organize artists together. That is partially why this organization was created; to give a voice to the Visual Arts. If you are unsure about any message you receive from Artists Registry.com, please contact us immediately. Many of you did and I was able to issue this warning early.

Well JEFF,
you were 100% correct. Your a sharp fella, and I appreciate you. I
haven't replied, but there was a part of me that wanted to tell her/
he that this has been turned over to the FBI. :)

Here's the FOLLOW up SCAM from whitney.

Hello Bill,

Thanks for your mail,i want you to know that the price
of the painting $450 is okay with me.In respect of
payment i have a client in the U.S who is owing me
$3,310. All i need to do to make payment easier and
faster is to instruct him to issue a cashiers check
and mail it to you on the address and name you want on
the check and you know it takes 24hrs for a cashiers
check to clear in the U.S.

But i would want to know if i can trust you to send my
balance to me via western union or money gram after
the money must have cleared in your bank to enable me
prepay the shipping company here so that they can
instruct their office in the U.S to come for the
pick-up from your location.pls mail me asap to enable
me arrange payment.Furnish me with your name and
address,so i will forward it to my client for payment.

Best Regards,
Witney.

Hi: I am an artist on your site and received the same e-mail
yesterday...Sent her/him more info. on my other "artworks" for
sale..."Whoever", is interested in buying two of them...Certified/money
order, no shipping costs necessary as they will pick up art...Sounded
fishy so I did a little research...From another art site I discovered
they are out of Nigeria IP 41.204.224.24..Then researched art fraud out
of Nigeria...I had a notion to e-mail them with my fraud info. but
decided it was not a great idea as these are professionals at what they
do...We, as artists must learn to recognize, at first glance, a
questionable incoming e-mail...These are not nice people!...I've decided
not to answer the second e-mail...and so it goes...

I am sending your e-mail directly to U.S. Senator Bill Nelson's office. Perhaps he would be interested in purchasing some of your art as you seem to be a collector. As well, I am sending this to Jeff who has a great
group of artists you might be interested in.

My piece is sold.

Thank you.
