Sculpting the Head
January 15-18, 2019
Model fee divided among students
An opportunity to sculpt a realistic portrait from life with internationally acclaimed sculptor Rick Casali. This unique 4-day workshop will feature several daily demonstrations in clay covering the structure of the neck and skull, facial proportions, geometric planes, and the specific anatomy of the eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. Casali’s philosophy defines structural form as the foundation for expressing the spirit of the model or portrait client. Recommended for portrait painters, sculptors, students of drawing, computer animators, and wood carvers. All skill levels welcome!

From genuine period pigments to bold modern colors, students learn the different characteristics and attributes of each artist's palette. This workshop includes the study of the costumed portrait and features discussions on anatomy and painting fabric.

Painting from Photo Reference
February 26 - March 1, 2019
Some subjects are almost impossible to paint from life. Artists often use photo reference to paint from. The emphasis in this class is learning how to use the photograph as something to “refer to” in the process of creating a painting.
Students will bring their own original reference photographs, either print or digital. Subject matter can be people, landscape, interior or anything else. Class instruction will include lecture, power point presentations and demos as well as individual easel-side instruction. My goal is to help students transform reference material into completed paintings that reflect their personal point of view as an artist. The instruction is primarily directed to painters in oil, but acrylic painters who are proficient with the medium are welcome in class. A full color booklet of notes that corresponds to the class is included.

Painting the Portrait
March 18-22, 2019
$750 Includes model fee
There are many criteria that go into creating a successful portrait. While capturing a good likeness of the sitter is very important, it’s not enough. A great portrait feels alive, evokes emotion, and captures the viewer through the beauty of its maker’s compositional and aesthetic choices. In this portrait painting workshop Jeff Hein will discuss what he believes to be the key elements of creating a great portrait. He will discuss creating a concept, formulating good composition and designing of marks, strokes and color. Jeff will also break down the formal process of painting a head into its most basic parts; drawing, value and color. As Jeff demonstrates each morning, he will show his techniques and discuss key principles associated with these three areas. While students paint from a live model each afternoon, Jeff will critique and assist on an individual basis in an effort to help each student become a stronger portrait painter.
Jeff and students will each do a single portrait over the duration of the workshop. The goal will be for students to witness, learn, and try the entire process that Jeff uses to complete a finished portrait.

Lois Griffel’s workshops are based on her books, Painting the Impressionist Landscape and Painting Impressionist Color. The workshop focuses on interpreting light effects of nature into color. Emphasis is on color perception, control of masses and values, and attention to design and composition.
This is exclusively an outdoor class. If weather is inclement, indoor work will include exercises, color theory, and still life. Using an Impressionist color palette , Lois guides students to free themselves from old habits while encouraging greater visual awareness.
This workshop is informal and fun, but be prepared to learn a lot and work hard too!
