  • Bio / Artists statement

My environment plays an important part in the making of my art. I am influenced by Florida's lakes, trees, and skies. My imagination is stirred by intuitively examining the sticks, branches and roots that I have collected from my neighborhood. These twisted limbs suggest parts of the human anatomy, which I can collage into gesturing wooden figures. When I began adding ceramic heads and faces to my figures, I became more involved with human emotions and their psychological implications. This, in turn, coincided with my increased interest in the metaphysical world. My work involves a lot of hands-on contact with the wood, through peeling, filing, chiseling, sawing, sanding, gluing and painting. This gives me time for contemplation. My Subconscious ideas can surface, and working with the materials, recycle and reshape the wood, giving it a new purpose and meaning. - Cheryl Bogdanowitsch
