Artist's Statement:

After being introduced to the art of Batik and Silk Painting...there was no turning back...I was for all times, hooked. I love the sensuously tactile feel of silks and always get a thrill when using the dyes which give such vibrant colors. This is an awesome way to produce art being it is such an exciting medium, not totally predictable which leads to discovery after finishing. There are a lot of steps in the process from the blank white silk to the final product which makes for excitement and anticipation.

My first exposure to this fascinating Art was while an undergraduate student at the University of Washington, Seattle. I spent day and night in the studio/classroom learning all I could, doing many projects and loving every minute.

The first step, as with most art, is the idea and many sketches, all the while thinking of colors, composition, texture, lights and darks, intensity..all of the art elements. Silk paintings are created on white silk. In order to keep the dyes from merging into each other, some type of resist is used to separate design elements. I use a mixture of hot bees wax and paraffin, especially when doing a Batik, and using a Tjunting tool or brush. For different outcomes, other resists I use are the gutta process and/or sizing technique. With Batik, the piece is usually submerged in the dye or painted on with the silk stretched taut on a frame. The dyes flow into the fiber and bond with the proteins, becoming a part of the silk thread with the design showing front and back. After the design is completed, it sets for twenty-four hours, and then is steam fixed, from two to three hours making the colors lightfast and washable.

You can see some of my works on Facebook: Art by patriciagardnerpope, and also on a page of Artists Registry under my name. Additionally, there are a few on the Sanford Seminole Art Association Bio Page.

EXPERIENCE

I had the pleasure and honor of ‘opening the eyes and hearts’ of many students in both Orange and Seminole Counties in Visual Art and Gifted Education for over twenty-eight years.

I participated in many outdoor and gallery shows in Clearwater, Melbourne, College Park, Pinecastle , Winter Park, Oviedo, Arrrowmont, Tenn, and the University of Central Florida.

I conducted Batik workshops at Crealde when I had a studio; participated in many summer sessions at Penland School in North Carolina and Arrowmont in Tennessee.
